Wapello was incorporated on July 15, 1856. It is the site of the Iowa Indian Tribe and is named after a Native American chief of the Meskwaki tribe, Wapello.
Home to the Louisa County Heritage Center, Wapello has ample opportunities to view bald eagles and a variety of wildlife along the banks of the Iowa River. Toolesboro Indian Mounds, one of the largest Indian mounds in the state of Iowa can be found in Wapello. You can also visit the Mark Twain Refuge, the Mississippi River and Lake Odessa. Being near all of these allows for ample acres of wetlands for boating, hunting and fishing.
